Dr. Michael J. Balick (Ethnobotany) – USAExpand
For more than three decades, Dr. Michael Balick has studied the relationship between plants and people (the field known as ethnobotany) and floristics (the study of botanical diversity within a specific region). Most of his research is in remote regions of the tropics, where he works with indigenous cultures to document plant diversity, knowledge of its traditional utilization, and evaluation of the potential of botanical resources for broader application and use, all while ensuring, through legal mechanisms, that benefits from such work are shared with local communities. His career has focused on traditional uses of plants—for food, medicines, fiber, personal care, etc.—in areas that have included the Amazon, Central America, Asia, the Middle East, and most recently the tropical island nations of Micronesia in the Western Pacific Ocean. He is recognized internationally as an expert in the use of plants and plant compounds for promoting health and wellness.
In his explorations of the diversity and uses of the plant kingdom and its conservation, Dr. Balick has led or participated in over 70 scientific expeditions, authored over 150 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, and authored or edited 20 scientific and general interest books and monographs. He received his Ph.D. degree in Biology from Harvard University and was a student of Professor Richard Evans Schultes, the legendary Amazonian ethnobotanist who is considered the “father” of modern ethnobotany.
Dr. Balick has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors in recognition of his accomplishments, including the Distinguished Economic Botanist Award of the Society for Economic Botany; accorded the High Title of Luhk En Kairoir Dolen Katau Nett, Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia; the Rachel Carson Award of the Natural Products Association; the prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship; the International Scientific Cooperation Award of The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and is also a Fellow of the AAAS; a Frontiers of Science Awardee, Society of Cosmetics Chemists; and, the Janaki Ammal Medal for Ethnobotany by the Society of Ethnobotanists.

Dr. Jun Nishihira (Medicine, Biochemistry) – JapanExpand
During his entire career, Dr. Jun Nishihira has been involved in a broad spectrum of life science research, from molecular biology to protein structure. Dr. Nishihira is currently the Professor of the Hokkaido Information University, Department of Medical Management of Informatics in Japan. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers on a wide variety of basic and clinical medicine, including cytokines, inflammatory bowel diseases, inflammatory skin disorders, and rheumatoid arthritis.
In the last several years, he has incessantly contributed to the establishment of clinical trials for functional foods in Hokkaido, in which he carried out nearly 30 clinical trials in collaboration with the ministry of agriculture and fishery of Japan, the Hokkaido municipal government, the city of Ebetsu, and various food industries. In this role, he has been profoundly involved in the research of nutrition and health and acting as a leading scientist for the development of functional foods, mostly for diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and digestive tract disorders.
After he obtained a medical degree from the Hokkaido University School of Medicine (Sapporo, Japan), Dr. Nishihira did his clinical training at the Hokkaido University hospital, where he specialized in hematology (study of blood and blood diseases) and immunology (study of the immune system). Following his clinical training, he joined a basic medical research company and focused on infectious diseases and immunology at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. After returning to Japan, he obtained a Ph.D. in lipid biochemistry from Hokkaido University and became a lecturer and later an associate professor of the Department of Biochemistry of Hokkaido University’s medical school.

Currently, I have been very much involved in the research and development of value-added functional foods originating in Hokkaido. Dr. Hervé Rogez (Food Science) – BrazilExpand
Dr. Hervé Rogez obtained a BSc and MSc in Chemical Engineering and Agricultural Industries (1992), and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Sciences and Bioengineering (1999) from Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium. Dr. Rogez is currently a professor at the Federal University of Para (UFPA) in Brazil, a reviewer of national and international journals, and a visiting professor at Université Catholique de Louvain.
Dr. Rogez has a tremendous amount of experience in science, technology, and engineering plant matrices rich in bioactive compounds, especially phenolic compounds. He studies the interactions of phenolic compounds with their natural environment, the processes of extraction, concentration, and purification, as well as the cracking of phenolic compounds, their analysis techniques, the validation of their in vivo use (in the context of the development of functional foods) and their technological applications.
He has been studying açaí since 1995 and is recognized as a worldwide authority on acai processing, having accumulated a multi-disciplinary knowledge about this traditional food.
Dr. Danyi Quan (Pharmaceuticals) – USAExpand
Dr. Danyi Quan is the Chief Scientific Officer of Xel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and has more than 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Quan received her Ph.D. in Pharmaceuticals at Hoshi University, Tokyo, Japan, and did her post-doctoral research work at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, Department of Dermatology, Dr. Howard Maibach’s laboratory.
Dr. Quan is a leading expert in advanced drug delivery systems, including transdermal drug delivery, topical drug delivery, fast-dissolving drug delivery, and controlled-release drug delivery. Also, Dr. Quan is actively involved in research and product development of Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCMs) by combining advanced drug delivery technologies and the TCM Ying-Yang concept to nutraceutical and cosmeceutical products. At Xel, Dr. Quan and her team invented the cold water cell-broken extraction technologies, finer-print chromatogram quality control methods and nano technologies for nutritional ingredients, and developed dozens of innovative nutritional and cosmeceutical products.
Dr. Quan has published over 25 scientific papers in top level pharmaceutical and medical journals, over 25 technical abstracts, and two book chapters. Dr. Quan also holds more than 15 U.S. and international patents. Currently, Dr. Quan is the adjunct professor for University of the Pacific, California; School of Pharmacy, University of North Dakota.
