What Do Berries, Tomatoes, and Ice Cream Have to Do with the Recent Government Shutdown?

During the recent partial government shutdown, there is one agency that you may not have given thought to that could have potentially affected your health in a big way—the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

And why should you be concerned with the fact that more than half of the staff of this critical department was furloughed? Because of these two words: Your Food.

Every day, food inspectors approve what is safe for us to consume and what isn’t. Because of the shutdown, our nation’s food inspectors were only able to conduct the most critical, high-risk inspections. Had it carried on much longer, we could have witnessed a rise in food-born outbreaks and illnesses. Not fun!

Fortunately for us all, the shutdown only lasted 11 days. But the lesson is one well learned. And although the furloughed food inspectors are now back at their jobs, food safety is something we should all keep top of mind every day.
