The Seeds of Doubt and Fear
Consider the classic example of two people (let’s call them Mike and John) who come in contact with a group of “troubled teens” on the street.

Mike is a former counselor for troubled teens and, based on previous experiences, knows that deep down these are good kids who, for one reason or another, don’t understand how to get the love and acceptance they want. Mike walks right up to the kids and starts kidding around with them, establishing immediate rapport. Before parting, he cautions them to stay out of trouble, and leaves with a smile. The scene played out just as he had anticipated it would.
John, on the other hand, has little experience with troubled teens. In fact, the only thing John knows about troubled teens is that they toilet papered his house last Halloween and bullied his son once after a high school football game. The pre-judgments taking place in John’s mind will be manifested in his interaction—or lack thereof—with the group. Likewise, sensing John’s fear and resentment, the troubled teens will inevitably react in such a way so as to produce the fruit of the seed John planted.
Your thoughts, preconceived notions, and expectations will all be mirrored by those with whom you come in contact. By thinking positively and expecting a favorable outcome, you can greatly increase your chances of having good interactions with prospective distributors each and every time.
