Real Antioxidant Balance

I think that it’s interesting that MonaVie's position on antioxidants has always been along the lines of emphasizing “balance” even when numerous companies in the nutrition industry have been touting the “superiority” of high-ORAC and mega-doses of certain antioxidants (when we knew all along that this was not the right way to go).

MonaVie RVL 3.0 Formula Coming Soon

We’re just about to introduce an updated version of the popular RVL Nutrition Shake Mix. Keep in mind that the shakes were already amazing in terms of overall “nutrient density” and balance between protein/carbohydrates/fat/fiber, but we took this opportunity to make them even better.

At the company, we refer to this revision as RVL “3.0” because it is the third time we’ve determined that the science of nutrition had progressed enough to warrant an update to the formula. Based on that new science, we adjusted the protein level and source, we slightly tweaked the carbohydrate blend, and we updated and improved the antioxidant profile. What this means is a formula that tastes better, stabilizes blood sugar more effectively, and controls appetite even more effectively than ever before—so you can lose the fat and keep the lean, to look and feel your best.

The new RVL Nutrition Shake Mix is based on a formula that I submitted as part of an International Olympic Committee (IOC) sports nutrition program that I'm a part of. Around the same time that I submitted this formula to the IOC program (May 2012), we were also in the process at MonaVie of updating the “2.0” RVL Shakes. So, when my IOC program colleagues came back with such positive feedback on the formula I submitted (top score based on overall balance from among approximately 100 submissions from around the world), I figured, that if it's good enough for the IOC, and good enough to recommend to the world’s top athletes, then it's probably a great place for MonaVie to be as well. So, we decided to use this same formula as the basis for our RVL 3.0 Nutrition Shake update.

The Flu. Shot. Healthy Strategies to Boost Your Immunity

It’s that time of year again. Time to stock up on tissues, hot tea, decongestant, and that nighttime sniffling, achoo-ing, wake up with a dry mouth medicine that knocks you out. Or is it?

Maybe this year can be different. Maybe this year you can power your way through flu season with a strong immune system and come out none the worse for wear. Incorporating these healthy strategies now could help minimize when you have to call in sick to the office—if at all.

Energy Drink Ingredients: Booster or Buster?

Although most energy drinks are little more than flavored caffeine/sugar concoctions, some products are striking out in new directions to deliver the energy boost that tired consumers are craving without the sugary side effects. As a nutritionist, I’m often conflicted when I’m asked if energy drinks are “safe” for kids (they are—if you choose intelligently) or whether they’re “healthy” to consume on a daily basis (most are certainly not, but some newer options are coming close).

Antioxidant Balance (part 3 of a 3-part blog series)

Another way to think about getting lots of "high antioxidant" foods into your diet would be to do so by "color" because red, orange, and yellow foods tend to be high in carotenoids; blue, indigo, and violet foods tend to be high in flavonoids; and green foods can be high in either/both flavonoids and carotenoids—but they are also certainly high in chlorophyll (the green pigment that protects the plant from the oxidizing rays of the sun).

Antioxidant Balance (part 2 of a 3-part blog series)

What to Look for in an Antioxidant Supplement?

As mentioned in part 1 of this blog series, that antioxidant nutrients are important for controlling the activity of the highly reactive oxygen molecules known as free radicals because unchecked free radical activity is what leads to the cellular damage known as “oxidation” and the cycle of glycation and inflammation that follows with additional damage and dysfunction.

Antioxidant Balance (part 1 of a 3-part blog series)

What are Antioxidants and Free Radicals?

The term "antioxidant" refers to the activity possessed by numerous vitamins, minerals, and other phytochemicals to serve as protection against the damaging effects of highly reactive molecules known as free radicals. Free radicals have the ability to chemically react with and damage many structures in the body. Particularly susceptible to oxidative damage are the cell membranes of virtually all cells, especially the skin because of its high lipid content and its proximity to ultraviolet rays from the sun.
