Balancing Stress and Restoring Vigor: What You Should Know for Optimum Health

I’m just back from the International Sports and Exercise Nutrition Conference (ISENC) meeting in Newcastle England where we enjoyed three days of fantastic lectures about nutrition for sports performance and healthy lifestyles. It was a truly international faculty with participants from around the world and only a handful of Americans—so it was an interesting global perspective about some of the leading “nutrition solutions” to the public health issues discussed.

MonaVie RVL 3.0 Formula Coming Soon

We’re just about to introduce an updated version of the popular RVL Nutrition Shake Mix. Keep in mind that the shakes were already amazing in terms of overall “nutrient density” and balance between protein/carbohydrates/fat/fiber, but we took this opportunity to make them even better.

At the company, we refer to this revision as RVL “3.0” because it is the third time we’ve determined that the science of nutrition had progressed enough to warrant an update to the formula. Based on that new science, we adjusted the protein level and source, we slightly tweaked the carbohydrate blend, and we updated and improved the antioxidant profile. What this means is a formula that tastes better, stabilizes blood sugar more effectively, and controls appetite even more effectively than ever before—so you can lose the fat and keep the lean, to look and feel your best.

The new RVL Nutrition Shake Mix is based on a formula that I submitted as part of an International Olympic Committee (IOC) sports nutrition program that I'm a part of. Around the same time that I submitted this formula to the IOC program (May 2012), we were also in the process at MonaVie of updating the “2.0” RVL Shakes. So, when my IOC program colleagues came back with such positive feedback on the formula I submitted (top score based on overall balance from among approximately 100 submissions from around the world), I figured, that if it's good enough for the IOC, and good enough to recommend to the world’s top athletes, then it's probably a great place for MonaVie to be as well. So, we decided to use this same formula as the basis for our RVL 3.0 Nutrition Shake update.

Lose Weight for Brain Gain

Two new studies—both published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition (JACN, vol. 31, no. 2, 2012)—show how healthy nutrition habits can boost brainpower.

Being overweight is a well-known risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia, with people who are overweight experiencing a 74% higher risk for developing dementia later in life compared to people of normal weight (and the dementia risk is much higher if your overweight is also combined with diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure). Previous studies have shown that even modest weight loss is associated with improvements in insulin resistance (“pre-diabetes”) and blood vessel function (vascular reactivity), and those changes in glucose control and blood flow are associated with improved memory, faster problem solving (“executive function”) and a significantly lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Free Radicals and Your Antioxidant Defenses

Many health-conscious people are familiar with the term “antioxidant” and understand that it refers to nutrients such as vitamins C and E (and many others) that help to protect your body from “free radicals” (highly-reactive oxygen molecules) created during the normal course of metabolism (basically, any time we breathe oxygen, we also create free radicals). Unchecked free radical activity is what leads to the cellular damage known as “oxidation” and the cycle of inflammation and tissue dysfunction that follows.

Can Açai Make You Smarter?

Just a few days ago at the annual scientific meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, researchers from the Aging Research Center at Tufts University presented a new study showing that açai can slow the aging process and actually reverse the effects of aging on the brain.

The Flu. Shot. Healthy Strategies to Boost Your Immunity

It’s that time of year again. Time to stock up on tissues, hot tea, decongestant, and that nighttime sniffling, achoo-ing, wake up with a dry mouth medicine that knocks you out. Or is it?

Maybe this year can be different. Maybe this year you can power your way through flu season with a strong immune system and come out none the worse for wear. Incorporating these healthy strategies now could help minimize when you have to call in sick to the office—if at all.

Why Aren’t We Eating Our Veggies?

Antioxidants Related to Heart Health

A recent study published this month in the American Journal of Medicine (Oct 2012) found a strong relationship between antioxidants in the diet and risk for heart attack. The Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that women who had the highest levels of “total antioxidant capacity” from fruits, vegetables, coffee, and whole grains also had the lowest risk for heart attack over a 10-year period (approximately a 20% reduction compared to women with lower antioxidant intake).

The Real Work Starts Now

The Acceler8 Convention in Anaheim ended just over a month ago, and the Get a VIEW Conference in Orlando is a mere 16 weeks away. A lot can happen in these months between events, so now is when the real work starts.

VIEW—The Science of Antioxidants Part 2

Why do you want to measure antioxidants?

One of the problems with antioxidants is that we can’t really “feel” them working in our bodies. We don’t wake up in the morning and say, “Wow, my antioxidant levels feel great today!” We often can’t “feel” the balance between damaging free radicals and protective antioxidants until there is enough free radical damage to result in a health problem. Before VIEW, people had to take their antioxidant supplements “on faith” – hoping and praying that they were working, but never really knowing if those nutrients were actually getting into their body and doing any good.
